Go, Anya! Anya starts to cook

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

For those of you who know me, you know I really never much cared for cooking. That’s why I married Tom! :-) He has been the cook in our family for almost 10 years now. Well, last week I finally decided it was time for me to start cooking dinner. It gives Tom more time with the girls when he gets home from work.

I’ve made a beef/vegetable stir fry; pulled pork (from the store) and corn on the cob; salmon with steamed spinach and couscous; my grandma’s hot chicken casserole; and black bean chilaquiles.

I would say the black bean chilaquiles was the biggest hit so far. Of course, Colleen will eat anything that has vegetables in it! I’m starting to feel a little more comfortable.

I think it will also be easier when Colleen starts going to “preschool” in the fall three days a week, so I don’t feel like I’m taking time away from her and Bea when I’m planning dinner and then she can help me make it when she gets home. I can do the planning/prep while Bea takes her nap and Colleen is at preschool.

Happy Mother’s Day to the best Mom in the world

OK.  You probably share that title with about a billion other people, but you are one of them.  Anya, thank you so much taking care of Colleen.  You definitely work your butt off to create a loving and caring place for her to grow up.  I can’t think of the words to express my love and gratitude for all that you do.  I know that you will do the same for Baby Dops when s/he make an appearance later this year.

Thank you for everything.

Our “geriatric” or “advanced-age” pregnancy…

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Yes, I am 35 years old.  That automatically puts this pregnancy is the high-risk category.  No matter how young you feel or how good of health you are in, your eggs simply age and you can’t stop that.  Ah well.  So far, the first trimester has been much easier than it was with Colleen. I’ve had total exhaustion, but the nausea has not been 24/7 like it was with her.  Luckily, both my parents and Tom have stepped in when I needed them to to watch Colleen.  Now, we’ll hope the next two trimesters go smoothly and see if we can keep my hypertension under better control this time.  I’d like to go full term with this one, if possible.  Though Colleen was very healthy when born at 35 weeks, I don’t relish another labor/delivery like hers.  But, we’ll take whatever we have to, just so we have a happy, healthy child like Colleen.

Will do a Colleen update this weekend.  It has been much too long and she just keeps getting more and more fun!

Yes, it’s been 6 years… (on November 2nd)

Happy 6th anniversary to my husband who puts up with me!  This year Tom was responsible for choosing something for our anniversary–my only criteria was that it had to include sangria or a mimosa.  He went the sangria route and Sunday night we went to a tapas place where we used to go for Valentine’s Day.  My parents watched Colleen.  It was nice to have a date for a couple of hours.

Of course we were right across the street from what used to be the restaurant where we had our rehearsal dinner.  It closed earlier this year.  So it is now added to the list of things that have closed since we got married…

1.  The band we saw for our first date broke up

2. The restaurant where we got engaged has closed

3.  The bakery where we got our wedding cake for the tea reception has closed

4.  We got my engagement ring at Marshall Field’s which no longer exists

5.  Now the restaurant where we had our rehearsal dinner has closed

Well, we always have the memories… :-)

You can tell I’m pretty tired…The Jack poop story

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

This is probably one of those stories that you had to be there to find it funny, but I still laugh so hard I cry and can’t talk when I try to tell it.

About a week ago, I woke up around 1am to Jack (one of our dogs) whining incessantly and looking towards the back door.  In my hazy state, I thought “he has to go out” and then I looked down and so two black piles on the floor of our bedroom where he lies down.  Oh great, he pooped.  Colleen was sleeping on her crib mattress next to us, so I couldn’t easily deal with this.  Thus, I woke Tom up from a sound sleep to let him know.  We both stared over the foot of our bed at the two piles and after a bit, Tom simply swept both piles under the end table with his foot!  For a second, I thought “oh my goodness, he is so exhausted he doesn’t know what he did!” and then I realized…they were Tom’s black socks!!  Not poop at all.

So, now when Tom goes to put on his socks, he says “I’m going to put on Jack poop” and I still start laughing uncontrollably–so, this is what it’s like to be sleep-deprived for over year…
